The Isle of Ely branch covers 3 electoral divisions - Ely North and East, Ely South and West, and Haddenham. Each of these divisions elects one County Councillor.
As the map shows, the area covered by the branch includes all of Ely itself, together with surrounding villages such as Chettisham, Prickwillow, Queen Adelaide, Stuntney, Stretham, Wilburton, Haddenham and Witchford.

The Isle of Ely is part of the South East Cambridgeshire constituency (for elections to Parliament) and the Eastern Region (for elections to the European Parliament).
The three divisions also elect Councillors to East Cambridgeshire District Council - five each for the Ely N & E and Haddenham divisions, and four for the Ely S & W division.
At present, the Ely County Council seats are both held by Liberal Democrats - Nigel Bell in Ely N & E, and Sue Austen in Ely S & W. The Haddenham seat is in Tory hands.
The District Council seats are split as follows:
The Ely S & W division is mostly urban, whilst the Haddenham division is mostly rural. The Ely N & E division covers the historic heart of Ely, but also includes the large new housing developments to the North of the city, together with villages and isolated rural settlements such as Shippea Hill. This geographical spread, plus its sheer population - at 5,000 houses, it is the most populous division in the County - makes it a particular challenge to fight.
In summary - at the moment, the Lib Dems hold 2 of the 3 County Council seats, and 7 of the 14 District Council seats.
